Joint statement.

Following their joint visit to Afghanistan, Foreign Secretary William Hague and Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said:

“We have just completed a two day visit to Helmand and Kabul: a first for the UK and UAE.  Our joint visit reinforces our shared commitment to Afghanistan.  We are both there to protect our national security and support the Afghan people to defeat the threat of “In Helmand, we saw the very real security progress being made by the contribution and sacrifice of Afghan forces together with their UK, UAE and international allies.  We remain committed to the ISAF campaign and the transition process.terrorism.

“The UK and UAE fully support President Karzai’s call for an Afghan-led political process.  In our meeting President Karzai set out the progress already made as well as remaining challenges.

“Usama bin Laden’s death was a devastating blow to Al Qaeda, a terrorist organisation that has inflicted incredible suffering on the Afghan people.  Now is the time for the Taliban to make a decisive split from Al Qaeda, renounce violence and engage in a genuinely representative political process.  We recognise that a process will take time and, to be sustainable, should involve all Afghans.  We call upon all those committed to a better future to take their first steps on this path to peace.

“A political process will be Afghan led but continued support and constructive engagement from the Islamic and wider world is essential.  Countries in the region, including Pakistan, with which both our countries have a deep and long term friendship and which has suffered immeasurably at the hands of terrorist groups, have a vital role to play.  Our joint visit is a symbol of the wide international support for Afghanistan.

“Political and military progress can only hold with a strong foundation of governance and the rule of law.  The UK and UAE are committed to supporting Afghanistan in these areas for the long term.  The UK and the United Arab Emirates are increasingly collaborating on development projects elsewhere, bringing together our respective strengths and skills to add value and impact.  I am delighted to announce our intention to extend this cooperation to Afghanistan.  We have been discussing areas of mutual interest, for example in the areas of education and infrastructure.  Over the coming months we will identify specific projects to work on together.  Alongside this, we emphasised the need for the Afghan Government to take the necessary steps to agree the IMF programme which is fundamental to improving the quality and availability of basic public services.”

Over the next few weeks, The British will evaluate their presence in Afghanistan. Following President Obama’s lead, it is expected that The British contingent may well be reduced in tandem. However, it is said that world security must be of paramount importance.

How will this play out I ask?

I think Obama brining our forces back is an election stunt. I also think that America and the British should keep to their own borders in the first place. The Middle East is not their home, and they should have never gone in there. Worlds security is not in any danger from people from this area IMO.

Not so sir.

I think that extreemist groups should do likewise.

Worlds security is not in any danger from people from this area IMO.

I question your opinion.

“Political and military progress can only hold with a strong foundation of governance and the rule of law.

People in the U.S. are tired of war, but our government has made a commitment to try to cut out terrorism, and protect our citizens and other nations along with their help, in fighting the steady encroachment of killing and trying to take over the freedom of other nations. Britain as been with us, as a great Allie, and we have stood together for over a hundred years, helping each other through these fights, and we are greatful to have them as our friends.

Hi Stev :-) People in the U.S. are tired of war.

This is also true in Britain. But, there is a job to be done. It is the world's security that is at stake. America and The United Kingdom have a special understanding, which is historic. I know that The British government understands America's situation.

I agree JO, and that commitmentis what are two nations are about, we see things close to the same and may argue and have are little flareups, but like family stick together in times of trouble. The job we face is important, and all our citizens, have a stake in the decisions we all face

These are troubled times, and the trouble is far from over. There will always be extreemists. The whole area is in turmoil, and will continue to be so for a long time to come.

People have to accept this as fact. They don't.

Thanks Stev.

It'll be interesting to watch play out. I think we'll be doing "strategic bombing" long after we've pulled out of Afghanistan. Just like we're doing in Yemen, Pakistan now.

Thank you for your comment :-) I think that America will continue to suppoert as you say. At the moment for example, all the medical lifts are done by the US. I think people don't fully understand how it works sometimes.

Unc.

Good to see you jere, I like your style.

Muhammad

Thank you for your comment, but I don't think you fully understand the position. Please explain your thinking a little more so I am able to see your points.

Even whilst being occupied, Afghanistan is the most dangerous place in the world to be female. Afghan girls have the shortest life expectancy on Earth, exclusively from the strict literal adherence to religious faith. The men who carry out attacks on Afghan school girls, are considered by their contemporaries, as to be, Men of "Perfect Faith." Undoubtedly, Afghans will choose to be Governed by Islamic Law. Not many can question leaving Afghanistan for financial reasons, but we can question the morality of it.

Pakistan will continue, perhaps easier now, to export their brand of terror. But civility will always be indebted to the radical coalition of soldiers, all the women and men who fight on the side of resistance.

Pakistan as a country has suffered more than any other at the hands of the Taliban, both socially and economically. My great fear is that as a nuclear power, Pakistan could fall into the hands of the Taliban. That would make an unsteady world into a very unstable one. This is why in my opinion we have to support Pakistan, however we can.

Thank you for your post, and I am pleased you accepted my friendship. Your comments are highly valued ones.
